Operation Astute is the Australian Government’s response to a request from the Government of Timor-Leste to assist in restoring peace to their country.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has deployed to Timor-Leste with a mission to assist the Government and the United Nations to bring stability, security and confidence to the Timorese to allow them to resolve their differences democratically and peacefully.

Following a general improvement in the security situation and the establishment of a comprehensive commercial logistic support contract, logistic elements of the ADF no longer required for these duties have returned to Australia, leaving about 925 ADF personnel in Timor-Leste. This force will remain in Timor-Leste continuing to provide a robust response capability to support the International Police.

International police from Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand and the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) from Portugal, provide security in Dili. The ADF provides support to these police operations as required.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is working alongside the ADF to assist with this mission.

Resolved Question: Is UN in East Timor above board ?
00:58 GMT, Monday, 28 April 2008 01:58 UK UN troops ‘armed DR Congo rebels’ The UN has covered up claims that its troops in Democratic Republic of Congo gave arms to militias and smuggled gold and ivory, the BBC has learned. The allegations, based on confidential UN sources, involve Pakistani and Indian troops working as peacekeepers. The UN investigated some of the claims in 2007, but said it could not substantiate claims of arms dealing. UN insiders told the BBC’s Panorama they had been prevented from pursuing their inquiries for political reasons.

Resolved Question: So when does the real “War on Terror” begin?
It was Saudi Arabian nationals that instigated the “911″ attacks. Since then Afganistan and Iraq have been invaded and Americans subjected to unlawful wiretapping. Why was the Bin Laden family ushered safely out of the US? Why isn’t Saudi Arabia under the spotlight? Why not go to the Congo where terrorism is prevalant? Or East Timor? What’s the point of all the airline safety, rabid patriotism and abuse of human rights if you’re not actually going to go after the terrorists? “School” me? If you’re not actually addressing the question then your “answer” is no better than crossing your fingers and squealing “no it isn’t”. The 911 terrorists were Saudi - any troops there? No. Bin Laden reportedly ran to Pakistan - troops there? No. The Taliban and the Iraqi armies had nothing to do with 911. I’m schooled plenty, and I don’t need hasty gut reactions written in red crayon to qualify it. If you don’t know, just go answer questions about mailboxes or astroturf and leave the tricky ones for the thinkers.

Resolved Question: If you could travel to every country whose name begins with the same letter, what letter would you choose?
This is just for fun. In case, it’s unclear, I’ll give an example. If you choose “E”, then you would be going to: East Timor, Egypt, Ethiopia, El Salvador, Estonia, etc. All the countries whose name begins with the letter “E”. So which letter would you choose? Here’s a list of countries by letter: http://www.nsrc.org/home_html_docs/countries.html
