Thinking Points: Iran Continues Meddling In Iraqi Affairs

Iran continues to pose problems for the stability of Iraq and now seems to be fractured in its approach. One approach is encouraging instability through the indirect actions of al-Sadr’s militia and his political grandstanding. Although at one time al-Sadr had problems controlling his forces, today he exercises near total control. What is disturbing is the direct action that Iran now takes against Iraq as seen in the above report. Giving the credit to Iran, there are those reporters and analysts who claim that Iraq situation has stabilized. The articles seem to glow with the generosity of Iran and downplays the actions of the Coalition Forces. One needs to examine the reasons for this supposed turn around by Iran. Iran has changed its profile in Iraq to get the U.S. forces out of the area. Having the Americans on its border creates all types of problems for the Islamic Republic. Iranian refugees, asylum seekers and defectors cross the Iraqi border seeking out American forces to give up information on Iran. This is unprecedented access to intelligence the U.S. has not had since the days of the Shah. The dissident forces in Iraq now feel bolstered by the “protection” that the Coalition Forces provide to protect the rebels’ operations. Reporters now flock to the border area and report on the living conditions of those still in Iran. Iran continues its nuclear ambition but now finds unprecedented scrutiny and a powerful intelligence apparatus at its door. Iran has operated under the radar for a number of years and has only had Israel making complaints about it meddling in Middle Eastern affairs. Because of the Iraq War, some light is now being shed on the unchecked influence that Iran wields. The issue of Iran usually now tops the discussions at the United Nations Security Council and even its staunchest supporters have had to reexamine the facts about Iran. Iran knows the longer the Iraq War drags out the longer the Coalition and American forces will stay in the region

Iran Awakening: One Woman’s Journey to Reclaim Her Life and Country

Iran Awakening: One Woman’s Journey to Reclaim Her Life and Country
Iran Awakening: One Woman's Journey to Reclaim Her Life and Country The moving, inspiring memoir of one of the great women of our times, Shirin Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize and advocate for the oppressed, whose spirit has remained strong in the face of political persecution and despite the challenges she has faced raising a family while pursuing her work.

Best known in this country as the lawyer working tirelessly on behalf of Canadian photojournalist, Zara Kazemi – raped, tortured and murdered in Iran – Dr. Ebadi offers us a vivid picture of the struggles of one woman against the system. The book movingly chronicles her childhood in a loving, untraditional family, her upbringing before the Revolution in 1979 that toppled the Shah, her marriage and her religious faith, as well as her life as a mother and lawyer battling an oppressive regime in the courts while bringing up her girls at home.

Outspoken, controversial, Shirin Ebadi is one of the most fascinating women today. She rose quickly to become the first female judge in the country; but when the religious authorities declared women unfit to serve as judges she was demoted to clerk in the courtroom she had once presided over. She eventually fought her way back as a human rights lawyer, defending women and children in politically charged cases that most lawyers were afraid to represent. She has been arrested and been the target of assassination, but through it all has spoken out with quiet bravery on behalf of the victims of injustice and discrimination and become a powerful voice for change, almost universally embraced as a hero.

Her memoir is a gripping story – a must-read for anyone interested in Zara Kazemi’s case, in the life of a remarkable woman, or in understanding the political and religious upheaval in our world.

Inside Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran is at the center of world attention politically, socially, and culturally—but it remains largely a cipher to the West. Award-winning photographer Mark Edward Harris has traveled throughout Iran to produce the first contemporary photographic book on a place seldom seen or understood. The Soul of Iran: A Nation’s Journey to Freedom
The Soul of Iran: A Nation's Journey to Freedom The truths about Iran—quite different truths from versions put forward by Washington, Tehran, and the media.

Iran thundered onto the world stage in 1979 with an Islamic revolution that shook the world. Today that revolution has gone astray, a popular democracy movement boldly challenges authority, and young Iranians are more interested in moving to America than in chanting “Death to America.” Afshin Molavi, born in Iran and fluent in Persian, traveled widely across his homeland, exploring the legacy of the Iranian revolution and probing the soul of Iran, a land with nearly three millennia of often-glorious history. Like a master Persian carpet maker, Molavi weaves together threads of rich historical insight, political analysis, cultural observation, and the daily realities of life in the Islamic republic to produce a colorful, intricate, and mesmerizing narrative. Originally published in hardcover under the title Persian Pilgrimages, this paperback edition is revised, with a new introduction and epilogue.

The Secret War with Iran: The 30-Year Clandestine Struggle Against the World’s Most Dangerous Terrorist Power
The Secret War with Iran: The 30-Year Clandestine Struggle Against the World's Most Dangerous Terrorist Power In the years since 9/11, the U.S. war on terror has focused on al-Qaeda, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Coverage of Iran has been devoted almost exclusively to its nuclear ambitions. Yet, as Ronen Bergman’s groundbreaking reporting in this vital investigative history reveals, for thirty years, Iran has been the world’s leading sponsor of global terror and stands as the most formidable sponsor of terror in the world today.

Bergman, one of Israel’s top investigative reporters, gained unprecedented access to extra-ordinary sources from top to bottom in the Mossad and intelligence agencies around the world. Based on over ten years of research and more than three hundred exclusive interviews with key intelligence figures, he reveals that Iranian terrorist masterminds have crisscrossed the globe, conducting bombings and assassinations with impunity — even renting apartments and planning bombing attacks in New York City. Iran’s proxy, Hizballah, has virtually taken over southern Lebanon and threatens Israel with high-powered weaponry supplied by Iran. Iran and Hizballah worked closely with al-Qaeda and other Sunni terrorist groups in developing their terrorist operations, and Iranian commandos trained Iraqi insurgents in the crafts of suicide bombing and the building of the roadside bombs that have killed so many U.S. troops in Iraq.

In response, and largely beneath the public’s radar, a vast clandestine war has been fought with Iran and Hizballah on one side and the CIA, Israel’s Mossad, and their European counterparts on the other. The full story of that secret war, told for the first time here, will fundamentally change the debate about U.S. national security priorities.

A new axis of evil is emerging from Iran and spreading around the world, and Ronen Bergman shows that the CIA and Mossad have so far been unable to thwart it. The Secret War with Iran is riveting and urgent.

Confronting Iran: The Failure of American Foreign Policy And the Next Great Crisis in the Middle East

In 2002, George W. Bush famously referred to Iran as a member of the “axis of evil.” The fierce rhetoric highlights the persistent antagonism between the two nations. The standoff has taken on renewed urgency with election of hard-line conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran’s new president and his bold resumption of the country’s nuclear program. Will Iran be the next front in America’swar on terror? Iran expert Ali Ansari sets the current crisis in the context of a long history of mutual antagonism. Despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations, Iran and the U.S. have loomed large in each other’s domestic politics for decades. From the overthrow of Mosaddeq in 1953 to the hostage crisis in 1979 and, more recently, the Gulf War and the War in Iraq, both Iranian and American politicians have forged narratives about an “evil empire” lying half a world away. This mutual mistrust has militated against dŽtente between the two nations–and may ultimately lead to war. An authoritative account of failed foreign policy, this book will be essential reading for anyone seeking to understand this explosive region.
