Flaming Crater - Darvaza Turkmenistan
In the heart of the Karakum desert of Turkmenistan the Darvaza Gas Crater or The Burning Gates give off a glow that can be seen from miles away during the dark night. The large crater is a result of a Soviet gas exploration accident in the 1950’s. It was created when a Soviet drilling rig was drilling for natural gas fell into an underground cavern resulting in a crater which today measures roughly 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters deep. The huge crater was set alight shortly after being discovered and has been burning ever sense. The recognizable smell of burning natural gas can be detected from a distance and becomes quite strong as you near the hot edge of the crater.
UNICEF: Life skills lessons for Turkmenistan students
GEOKDEPE, Turkmenistan, 8 January 2008 — After school, seventh-grader Jeren Yovbagshiyeva often comes home to sit down with her family for afternoon tea. On this day, however, instead of the usual talk about her progress in class, she has something else to discuss. Her school has just had a special lesson about the risks of drug use and the dangers of HIV and AIDS. The lesson has stirred her to action. “I was really struck by how drugs can destroy your whole life,” she says. “So I really feel it’s important for me to share this information with my friends and relatives.” Jeren’s training is one component of a UNICEF-supported effort to implement life-skills education in schools across Turkmenistan. Life skills make young people aware of the risks they face and help them make informed decisions in order to stay healthy.
